Scan Center Spotlight:
OC Vital Imaging
TOC Vital Imaging has been providing heart scans to southern California
since 2001 and has developed an extensive experience, having scanned
approximately 10,000 people. They’ve also performed over 1000 CT angiograms.
In California, no physician referral is required for a heart scan. In
addition, Medicare now covers heart scans for a coronary calcium score
provided you have at least two of the risk factors of metabolic syndrome,
hypertension, diabetes, family history of early heart disease, high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, history of smoking, or obesity. Medicare
coverage has prompted a number of private health insurance companies to
begin covering heart scans, also.
OC Vital Imaging is under the direct supervision of the cardiologists of The
Orange County Heart Institute, one of the largest and most experienced
Cardiology groups in California. The center uses the GE/Imatron Electron
Beam CT scanner (EBT).
Heart scans are immediately reviewed and a consult with the patient is
performed by an experienced nurse practitioner. Cardiologists subsequently
review the heart scans. Lung scans, full body scans, and virtual
colonoscopies are reviewed by the center’s radiologists. The center also
provides CT angiography, in which a small quantity of dye is injected in the
vein in the forearm to provide visualization of blood flow in coronary
arteries.
Cardiologist Dr. Lawrence Santora, Medical Director of OC Vital Imaging, is
a member of The Orange County Heart Institute, in Orange, California. He
recently co-authored, with Dick Butkus and Steve Armentrout, MD, the new
book, The OC Cure for Heart Disease. The OC Cure describes how heart scans
can save lives and outlines a diet plan and exercise information. It details
the story of Dick Butkus, NFL Hall of Fame linebacker, who came to OC Vital
Imaging for a full body scan that detected coronary artery disease so severe
that he needed coronary artery bypass surgery. The book can be seen in more
detail at ocheartcure.com
.
Co-author Dr. Armentrout, an expert in nutrition, discusses the most
effective diet to maintain a healthy heart, and points out the best foods
that offer proven defenses against heart attacks. Dr. Armentrout’s 50-25-25
formula for healthy eating can put you on the road to prevention.
In addition to heart scans, OC Vital Imaging also provides state of the art
PET scans, or Positron Emission Tomography scans used to stage, detect, and
follow cancers. PET scans are also one of the few methods available to
detect Alzheimer’s disease. We choose the best scanner that best suits the
patients clinical needs, all under one roof! Among the services provided at the center
are:
- Heart, lung, full body scans
- Virtual colonoscopy
- CT coronary angiograms—using a 64-slice CT scanner.
- A combined GE 64-slice CT /PET for
selected diagnostic studies.
