Scan Center Spotlight:
HeartCheck America
HeartCheck America—Los Angeles
HeartCheck America—Chicago
HeartCheck America—Arlington Heights (IL)
The HeartCheck America scan centers are among the pioneers in the world of
CT heart scanning. Both centers have developed a deep experience in heart
scanning as the technology has evolved. The Los Angeles site has scanned
around 35,000 people. The Chicago site, affiliated with the University of
Illinois, has scanned over 100,000 people since opening nearly 20 years ago,
the largest experience of any U.S. scanning facility. Many of the major
clinical studies performed over the years examining CT heart scanning were
performed with the participation of these two important centers.
HeartCheck America President, Bruce Friedman, is passionate about the
service his centers provide. "My father and grandfathers all died of heart
attacks. They never knew what hit them. That’s why I’ve always been
extremely careful about my health habits. I’m a low-fat vegetarian, I
exercise vigorously every day, I’ve never smoked a cigarette in my entire
life, and my cholesterol has always been low. But, my most recent coronary
artery scan revealed that I’m building plaque far faster than would be
expected in a man of my age. This led me to sophisticated blood testing
which identified an abnormality that may very well be contributing to the
progression of my disease. While there’s no guarantee that treating this
abnormality will enable me to escape the fate of my father and grandfathers,
it certainly does provide me with a chance they never had. And, if it wasn’t
for the Coronary Artery Scan, I’d most likely be proceeding, in total
ignorance, down the very same path that led to their demise."
The HeartCheck America centers have also been instrumental in broadcasting
the message that CT heart scanning represents a major innovation in early
heart disease detection. Over the years, they have enrolled celebrity
support to publicize the concept. Former NBA star and Basketball Hall of
Famer, Isiah Thomas, has been among the supporters of the HeartCheck America
effort to increase awareness. HeartCheck America has been featured in
countless interviews and news stories in USA Today, Time magazine, NBC news
and many others.
LA HeartCheck America Medical Director, Jamshid Maddahi, MD, is former
chairman of the American Heart Association Council on Cardiac Imaging. Dr.
Maddahi is also Professor of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology and
Radiological Sciences, UCLA School of Medicine; Director, Cardiac Imaging,
Nuclear Medicine and Clinical PET, Biomedical Imaging Institute, Los
Angeles, CA, and author of numerous scientific studies on heart imaging.
Chicago HeartCheck America Medical Director George Kondos, MD is Associate
Section Chief and Associate Professor of Medicine, Section of Cardiology,
College of Medicine, University of Illinois–Chicago. Dr. Kondos’ many
scientific contributions include compilation of the database of over 35,000
heart scans. These data are widely used by the nation’s scan centers to
generate percentile rank on heart scan scoring.
In addition to heart scanning, all HeartCheck America centers provide full
body scanning, virtual colonoscopy, lung scanning, bone densitometry
(osteoporosis screening) and angiography.
